Oakland Raiders' Ricky Brown Continues ASAP Off Season Regimen/ Podcast

Raiders_logo_6

If you'd like to spend a day in Ricky Brown's shoes...you'd better be in a hurry. He does things fast.... very fast.  Of course, keep in mind, this guy was a track and football star back at Cincinnati Elder High School and it was running times like these that got people to notice:

  • 11.1 in the 100 meter dash
  • 22."something" in the 200 meter
  • 50.6 in the 400m

Oie_brown_action1_2 With that kind of speed and football talent to match it, it was on to Boston College to excel as a starting linebacker with some good friends of his, Nick Larkin (Cincinnati St. X) and Tom Anevski (Elder).... all three, by the way, trained extensively at ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power. And after all the games and bowl appearances ended, it was on to the National Football League. In fact, he's embarking on his third season with the Oakland Raiders. So when he's back in his hometown, don't be surprised to see him working out at ASAP @ The River's Edge. The facilities there include strength training equipment, CORE Training devices, indoor Field Turf athletic fields and, of course the watchful eye of Coach Ted Lambrinides.
In today's podcast, Ricky talks about training camp in Napa Valley, his current workout regimen and some info on his nutrition program where "breakfast is the most important meal of my day". Just click on Ricky's game photo above for the 10 minute interview.

European Professional Basketball Player Chris Ensminger: ASAP Podcast

Brose_baskets

When Chris Ensminger is not working his 6'10" frame towards the basket as a professional player in the EuroLeague, he's usually back home in Cincinnati...or in training at The Workout @ Covington, just across the Ohio River in Kentucky.  ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power has just what "der Grosseman" needs to keep his body in optimal shape for the rigors of pro sports.  In fact, ASAP Director Ted Lambrinides added cambered squat bars to the training regimens at both the facility in Covington and the new facility in Cleves, Ohio (Cincinnati's westside) ASAP @ The River's Edge. The bar has allowed Chris to work the all-important squat exercise to a much increased range of motion.

Oie_asap_logggooo_463_2 Hear all about it in today's ASAP Strength Training Podcast. Just click on the official ASAP PODCAST Logo.

Chris talks about:

  • Cincinnati Oak Hills High School and Coach Mike Price
  • being a golf teammate of PGA Tour Pro Brett Wetterich
  • some big years and NCAA March Madness experience at Valparaiso University

ASAP Strength Training Podcast: Cincinnati Princeton High School Strength Coach Mike Shibinski

Shibinski_014Oie_asap_logggooo_463

For over 25 years, Mike Shibinski has been working with top notch athletes at top notch programs. As a three sport athlete and football player at Cincinnati Elder High School, Mike learned the value of hard work and serious training. He honed his athletic skills playing college football for the Butler University (Indianapolis) Bulldogs. Soon after, Mike headed to Ohio State University to become a graduate assistant strength coach for the Buckeyes and a Master's Degree in the strength training and conditioning of athletes. He began his coaching career at Mansfield (Ohio) Malabar High School and before settling down at Cincinnati Princeton High School, he acquired state championship rings at the legendary Moeller High School and at the Cincinnati Academy of Physical Education (C.A.P.E.).

ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power caught up with Coach Shibinski on a visit to his home fitness center/ gym.  Be sure that if this "gym" wasn't in the basement of a home in a well manicured Cincinnati suburb, he could open up a training center here!

Today's podcast focuses on the accomplishments of this well known strength coach as well as taking a look into what it takes to establish a sound high school strength and speed program.

ASAP~ Athletic Strength And Power Podcasts: Illinois Football Coach Ron Zook

Oie_asap_logggooo_463 Click on the ASAP Logo for today's podcast.

The St. Xavier High School Strength & Conditioning Clinic was a successful event. Carlo Alvarez, who is the strength and conditioning coach of Ohio's reigning #1 football squad, played host to this clinic where Ken Leistner was the Master of Ceremonies and ASAP Director Ted Lambrinides was one of the seminar's speakers.  The  clinic awarded  CEU's  in accordance with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).Ron_zook_2

Kicking off the clinic was the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year (2007), Ron Zook of The University of Illinois where he serves as the Head Football Coach. Coach Zook had a very nice presentation along the theme of "Competition" and had some good videos to share which depicted the competitive situations that he gets his players into during the off-season. In fact, after watching that video of the players battling to exhaustion in a truck tire drill, it's easy to see why their nicknamed the "Fightin' Illini".

After his talk, Coach Zook spent some time with ASAP Podcaster Ed Cicale.... discussing a little bit about his days at Miami University (Ohio), known as the "Cradle of Coaches", where the Redskins only lost one game in three seasons while he played defensive back there. Coach also emphasized the importance of the off-season strength training and conditioning program.

Zook coached at several other schools including the University of Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, and Florida before arriving in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. He made a few stops in the NFL, too.

ASAP:Football Players Developing Quickness & Burst for NFL Combine, College Pro Days

Dsc_0766 It's a busy time of the year for ASAP Director Ted Lambrinides. A multitude of college football players are prepping for Pro Days held on college campuses and of course, the NFL Combine which is held at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana. Since Ted has been to several of the combines at Indy, he knows what the pro scouts and coaches are looking for and how to help his athletes best prepare. His long time association with professional NFL strength coaches gives ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power~ an obvious edge in athlete preparation. In fact, ten NFL strength coaches serve on the ASAP Advisory Board. In fact, just this afternoon, Jacksonville Jaguar strength coach Mark Asanovich stopped into The Workout @ Covington and discussed equipment and program design.
Two weeks ago, Ted was on the outskirts of Detroit, Michigan as he visited the new Allen Park facility, home of the Detroit Lions and assistant coach Kevin Tolbert. Coach Tolbert gave a full tour of the Allen Park expanse as the two were able to discuss the training of pro football players. Furthermore, Ted was able to test out some of the new strength training equipment employed by the Lions. Check out the ASAP Photo Album (found in the left hand column) for some pictures from the tour. Here's a couple of pics to get you started:

Northern Kentucky's "Brazilian Strikers" Girls Soccer Team at ASAP

Dsc_0949_2

A Northern Kentucky Girls Soccer program has been working to gain an edge through an intense training program. Coach Attef Mikhail has enrolled his team, the Brazilian Strikers, into an all-inclusive training program at The Workout@Covington, just a long strike from downtown Cincinnati.Dsc_0845 The workouts include intense Acceleration Training on the treadmills, Speed and Agility Training geared toward soccer specific movement patterns, Core Development, and Strength Training. Explosive Training is also being employed through the use of the SHUTTLE MVP, a cutting edge training device that involves firing the explosive, fast twitch muscle fibers.

Female athletes tend to use their quadricep muscle strength more than their male counterparts, who involve much more hamstring firing in their lower body, athletic movements. This can lead to ACL tears and stress fractures due to musclular strength imbalances. Hamstring muscles should be 60-70%  as strong as the quadriceps. Therefore, the ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power program is designed to enhance strength gains in that all-important knee joint. Front lunges, side lunges, squats, the Shuttle MVP and a variety of single joint movements using the Hammer Strength machines make sure that these girls are strengthening the musculature involved. Furthermore, the girls are pushed through a speed/agility station and then sprint training using an interval training concept.

For more pictures of the Brazilian Strikers Soccer team in training, check out the ASAP Photo Album (in the column on the left).Dsc_0937

Time For Some Hard Work? How About Ken Mannie's Approach?

There's always plenty that you can do to jump start your training program. One way would be to get down to one of several of "The Workout" Training facilities. In Cincinnati, Ohio there's Hyde Park, Adam's Landing, Western Hills or in Northern Kentucky... The Workout @ Covington. Also, the Tampa, Florida location is very popular at The Athletic Performance Center where Scott Savor trains many high performance athletes.Cliff_pullup1_2

Of course, there are plenty of coaches and trainees who don't live in proximity of of one of our training centers...yet still want the latest insights and opinions from the ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power network. Due to the technology of the internet, we get requests for information from all reaches of the world! Without a doubt, some of our more popular blogposts are those with the Ken Mannie influence. Coach Mannie, the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach of Michigan State University is on the ASAP Advisory Board.

Today's post features a pdf download from a recent POWERLINE segment that appeared in Coach & Athletic Director. We're sure you'll enjoy this one entitled "Strength Training's Bottom Lines."

CHOOSING TO WIN !!!

While there are certainly enough
factors in physical improvement that
are out of our control (e.g., genetically-
based road blocks), there are
enough controllable variables for us
to corral and use to our benefit....... Ken Mannie

Check out Ken Mannie's "Short list of Manageable
Criteria for Success"

The ASAP Dynamic Warm-Up

Dynamicwarmup

The Athletic Strength And Power program focuses on all the components of fitness and training. Strength, cardiovascular, flexibility, speed, agility, explosion, plyometrics and burst training are the areas that the ASAP program design targets. The coaching staff then implements the course of action that best meets the needs of the particular athlete.... depending on their sport and body...or somatotype.
The Dynamic Warm-up prepares the athlete for all of the physical training and demands that will be put upon the body throughout the workout. Initially, the athlete will perform

  • Walking Front Lunges
  • Walking Side Lunges
  • 3yds jog/ body squat
  • Half Speed Jogs
  • Backward Runs
  • Side Shuffles
  • Carioca

These movements place emphasis on allowing proper bloodflow to the musculature that is going to be stressed. For example, the hips and the muscles in that surrounding region, are taken through a wide range of movements that prepare the athlete for the harder work that follows.

To get to the next level of fitness, incorporate a Dynamic Warm-Up into your training plans. Call Ted Lambrinides at "The Workout"  859-261-4111

Improving Athletic Performance

Oie_pictures_from_summer_2005_131

As your fitness levels improve, your speed, agility and quickness will be enhanced which will enable you jump higher, run faster and be more explosive in your sport. Keep these points in mind:

  • Strive for Peak Performance during tournament time or the critical period of your season. If you're at your strongest during the off-season, your athletic performance will diminish during the season.
  • Make safe and efficient use of your training time. In season programs need to mirror what was done during the off-season. However, total training time and frequency may need to be reduced. Coaches need to plan accordingly to make sure that their players are properly prepared...and that when the playoffs or tournament time arrives, the athletes are as strong, if not stronger than at the beginning of the season.

Oie_amber_2 The A.S.A.P. Program is an all-inclusive training program geared toward getting athletes to perform at their best.   The training and coaching staff at "The WorkOut"  are sure to push each athlete to their maximum potential in the minimum amount of time.  Many of the top athletes in the greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region  have found out that the acceleration training programs,  speed and agility programs and the strength training and conditioning programs are superior methods to getting prepared for the next level. Schedule a training session today at The Workout @ Covington, The Workout @ Adam's Landing, Hyde Park Personal Training or ASAP @ The Western Sports Mall.

Strength Training for Females.... Debunk the Myths

July_2007_006_6 Today's Today's post is directed toward the female athlete. Ted Lambrinides and myself receive much correspondence and questions on this subject. Michigan State strength Coaches, Ken Mannie and Mike Vorkapich have recently co-authored an article that appeared in Coach & Athletic Director Magazine. Click here to read an Accent_on_Female_Strength_Training

Females may want to hit the cardio work for 20-30 minutes 6-7 times per week.... this includes fast walking, jogging, elliptical, treadmills, stationary bikes, recumbents, rowers.
Strength training may be more your friend than you think. I would suggest hitting the weights in a high intensity fashion, three times per week. From a physiological standpoint, you really can't put muscle on top of fat.... and the reality is that by actually having increased muscle tissue, you'll be burning and metabolizing more calories even as you sit at that desk!  Certainly don't worry about too much muscle. Unless your on anabolic steroids...you never have enough muscle....besides, it slowly deteriorates over the years. You'll just have to trust me on this

Be sure to include these exercises in the plan.
Pullovers
Pulldowns
Lateral Raises
Overhead Presses
Chest Flys
Bench Pressing... also inclines and declines
triceps isolations
bicep work

Leg work:
thigh abduction and adduction...high reps (25-45)
Leg Extensions    20 reps...or until intense burn
Leg Curls.... can't forget the hammies.... gives the legs form and balance

...those exercises, or at least some variation must be performed at least 2 times per week...preferably three!

Abs
many variations to choose from here....perform several each day! See our past ASAP post on Abdominal and Core work and the accompanying exercise sheet by Sarah Ensminger.

...those exercises, or at least some variation must be performed at least 2 times per week...preferably three!

Yoga............ whenever you want as much as you want.

Additionally, by improving your diet, eliminating all fast foods, all high fructose corn syrups, added sugars, and stuff like that you'll be fine. Worry less about cheeses, meats, occasional pizzas....worry more about sugars and HIDDEN sugars.

Jacksonville Jaguar Strength

This week, we'll take a page (literally) from the Jacksonville Jaguars' strength training manual. ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power Advisory Board Member, Coach Mark Asanovich has developed and researched his training program. The philosophy is paying off.... stronger players, less injuries and a blue collar...hard working mentality.

Jaguar_helmet    Asanovich Nfllogo793970_2

Asanovich focuses on strength training fundamentals...and at Jacksonville, they like to coach reps more than they like to count reps.  So, whether you are a coach, a player or someone who enjoys strength training for the development of personal fitness, you'll find an appreciation for the philosophy of the strength training program of the Jacksonville Jaguars! ASAP Advisory Board: Ken Mannie; Michigan State University

He's been training athletes for over thirty years and he still has his sleeves rolled up and is ready to take his athletes at Michigan State University to the next level. The guy is a motivator.... I've seen him in action..... and he sure knows how to get the job done. Period. There's a reason why ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power has him postioned on our ASAP Advisory Board. One, he's insightful. Two, he knows the business of strength training. Finally, his personality just plain makes you want to work hard. Mannie_ken_2
Coach Ken Mannie is a regular contributor to Scholastic Coach and Athletic Director  and, of course  www.AthleticStrengthAndPower.com . Coach Mannie will be starting his 14th year as the Head Strength Coach for the MSU Spartans.

Today, ASAP posts a recent article found in Coach and Athletic Director. The article covers a few aspects of certain topics like lifting movements, training equipment and multi-joint movements. Ken's ethical style is not accompanied by product endorsements or related advertising.... just straight shootin', objective imformation to help coaches and trainees at any level.
