Coach Rick Court is changing the whole deal in College Park, Maryland. It ain't playtime..... more like pay time! The new Head Football Coach D.J. Durkin hired the fiery coach to instill a whole new training culture and attitude, and inspire the Maryland Terrapins to a different echelon in Big Ten Conference play.
Our next stop lead us to Clemson, South Carolina. The home of the Clemson Tigers, runner-up to last year's National Championship, it's also the home (actually Pendleton, S.C.) of the Smokin' Pig BBQ! Plan accordingly though if you want to enjoy this great place, it's only open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. They spend the other days prepping for those three days! This may have been the best brisket ever. It's a must stop for BBQ lovers and lots of pure protein for a post training meal. While you are there, treat yourself to the Sweet Potato Crunch. One word: WOW
Prior to helping The Smoking Pig open up, we spent the morning with the Clemson Tigers! That included watching the squad load up on the shuttle from the stadium strength training complex over to their indoor. We also got to see some of the construction site of the new football complex, which is set to become the most incredible environment in all of college football. They are not leaving anything out with this configuration. The team went through a series of dynamic warm-ups and then moved to many of the assessments used to measure football speed and agility. The strength staff recorded all of the data as the team, which appeared FOCUSED, zipped through the tests.
From there, it was back onto the shuttle for the quick ride back to Clemson Memorial Stadium.... known to many as "Death Valley". That's where the Tigers went into to strength training mode and Head Strength Coach Joey Batson and his staff that includes his long time assistant, Larry Greenlee directed and coached one of college football's elite programs. These two have been training Tigers together for over 16 seasons. We were able to sit down with Coach Greenlee, set up our remote location recording studio and talk 'training' with the coach who also is a Clemson graduate and former athlete there, too. There's been a lot of talk and writing about the Paleo Diet..... and it almost seems like it's a Gluten-Free world that we live in now...... or is it? And what is the big deal about gluten? And for that matter, the Paleo Diet? What is a Paleo Diet?
In this ASAP Podcast, which was recorded at the Leo Seals Jr. Football Complex on the campus of Mississippi State University on our ASAP SEC Strength Tour 2016, we reached out to the MSU Bulldogs' Sports Dietitian Kelly White. She has joined us in the past for this popular ASAP Podcast. In this podcast, we get to the heart of the previously stated issues! (Please excuse our technical issue with regards to the recording quality). This ASAP Podcast sponsored by BiPro Pure Protein
ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power founder and NFL~Zebra Technologies Consultant Ted Lambrinides was a guest on The Rocky Boiman show last night and explained the tracking analytics that are being used by the National Football League and now, several big colleges, too.
ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power made the visit to Columbia, South Carolina this summer to check in on their new director of Football Strength & Conditioning Jeff Dillman. After we caught a quick breakfast sandwich at Bojangles, we headed over to the University of South Carolina's Brice-Williams Stadium, a towering place that's typical of the huge stadiums encountered in SEC Football. The Gamecocks' football strength training center is located at the north end, just a few yards from the palm trees and a line of Cockabooses that are a huge hit with the tailgating crowd on gameday.
It was warming up outside that day as the mercury cruised up toward 99 degrees! But the heat didn't affect Coach Dillman...nor the Gamecocks as the session began within the spacious football strength complex . The players filed in and before long the strength staff had it all at full tilt as the players hit their stations and the training began. Meanwhile, the nutrition staff prepped workout recovery drinks, vitamins and hydration options for this SEC squad that opens up at Vanderbilt University in just a few weeks.
After the workout, Coach Dillman and I slipped into his strength office, which I had turned into a makeshift recording studio, for this candid interview. I was also able to snag a few pieces of bubble gum that's piled high in an official South Carolina Gamecocks bucket. We discus that and the training that has been going on at South Carolina Football:
Coach Holsopple(Right) Ted Lambrinides and The ATL
ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power finally got to Atlanta to see the new and upgraded facilities at Georgia State University Football. The Head Strength & Conditioning Coach, Scott Holsopple, is quite pleased with the way things turned out and has nothing but positive vibes about how the Panthers are progressing as they make their way toward their opening game against Ball State.
Georgia State University is located right in the heart of downtown Atlanta and is home to around 50,000 students! So by enrollment numbers, it's the largest college in Georgia. The athletics program is a member of the Sunbelt Conference and the Panther Football squad won their first bowl game last year after only 6 years of existence. Not bad. And with Coach Holsopple, the Panthers won't find a more dedicated coach. In fact, he stations himself in a loft apartment just a mile or two away from the facility....an easy jaunt for he and his Alaskan Husky. And he already has a grasp on the dining scene in downtown. Let's start with his great suggestion of catching brunch at Ria's Bluebird...where The New York Times Review rated their pancakes as "world's finest"...... They were! I am already planning a trip back for more.
Coach Holsopple joined us a few months ago for an ASAP Podcast that was recorded at the Hammer Strength Clinic Battleground Academy Tennessee. In this fresh podcast, Scott discusses his background, what's going on at Georgia State Football, their brand new strength training center, the conditioning workout that we observed , and the progress the team has made as they prep for the 2016 season. By the way, the weather that day was typical Atlanta, Georgia summer hot. HOT. And Holsopple was sporting a heavy duty Georgia State hoodie along with just as thick sweat pants. With the athletes sweating profusely all around, and myself, from time to time, ducking into the facility for a cold drink a quick hit of air conditioning, the coach never wavered. But that's Coach Holsopple!
Coach Mick shares a meaningful message with the Buckeyes
The Ohio State Buckeyes' Ass't A.D. for Football Sports Performance, Mickey Marotti.....known around the Woody Hayes Athletic Center as "Coach Mick"... is preparing to hand over the "keys", both figuratively and literally, of the OSU Buckeye Machine to his head Coach Urban Meyer The Buckeyes check in to fall camp on Sunday as the off-season grind comes to a halt and the equipment managers start issuing shoulder pads, helmets and the rest of the gear to protect the players. The team is ranked 5th in the coaches preseason poll, so you'd think that they have a ton of players returning. However, there are only a handful of starters that will take the field against the Bowling Green State Falcons on September 3rd over in the giant horseshoe Ohio Stadium.
Pre-season respect like that is a tribute to great recruiting and great preparation. Ohio State brings in some great players, but that's only part of the equation when you're making runs at national championships. Preparation is also a huge piece of the pie and Coach Marotti has the experience to help guide these elite athletes to a higher level.
Check out our ASAP exclusive behind the scenes photos and videos of the Ohio State Buckeyes in training!
Recently, ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power checked in to Starkville, Mississippi as we wanted to see how first year Head Strength Coach Nick Savage, the rest of his staff and the Bulldogs are doing as they prep for the 2016 college football campaign. Coach Savage, who took over following the departure of Rick Court to the University of Maryland, has the Mississippi State Bulldogs going full throttle as they head their way into another fiercely competitive SEC Football season. We caught the "Dawgs" on an "upper" day that also included a trip through the giant glass door out to the practice field for some dynamic warm-ups, agility work and finally some resistance runs with chains.
After the workouts were completed, Coach Savage and I sat down for this podcast (please excuse the technical issue with the microphones) and discussed the progress that the MSU Bulldogs have been making during the early 2016 year, day to day coaching matters and issues and how his particular journey has lead him, at the age of 27, to this high powered football team under the direction of Head Football Coach Dan Mullen.
