They say that "a man's home is his castle". OK..... However, today I visited a man's home which was his weightroom! The home has several gyms with in the walls...and an addition that houses another gym. Even while taking care of culinary duties, one can still pump some iron....right there in the kitchen. Want to go out and sit on the deck? Forget it.... . there's training to be done there, too. That's the way it is when your Kim Wood. He's been involved in strength training and conditioning for decades. Yes, decades.
He started weight training as a youngster, training to become a better wrestler and football player. He then continued his training, behind the scenes, as a running back at the University of Wisconsin in the sixties....long before the fancy weightrooms and training complexes known to today's players.
Later, he worked for Arthur Jones, the legendary designer of the Nautilus machines.
In 1975, Kim became one of the first strength coaches of professional football, when he was hired by Paul Brown of the Cincinnati Bengals. During that time, he was also one of the three principals who created the now, world famous, Hammer Strength machines.
He retired from the Bengals after 28 years with the team and was lucky enough to experience two Super Bowls along the way. He crossed paths with coaches Bill "Tiger" Johnson, Forrest Greg, Bill Walsh, Sam Wyche, Dick LeBeau...met with Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler on several occasions, and trained many All-Pro NFL stars.
Recently, he wrote a couple of chapters for Ellington Darden's latest book entitled "The New Bodybuilding for Old School Results".
Coach Wood's son, John Wood, didn't stray far from the strength training background that he grew up around. After his playing days as a University of Michigan football player, John ventured out into his own business
known as Functional Hand Strength. Check out his site for some great strength training equipment and John's blog.
