Normally, I'm blogging about squat techniques, awesome collegiate or pro training facilities, sports nutrition or uploading some cool photos or podcasts from my travels. However, today I have to tell you about a guy I met last weekend at the Michigan State Strength Clinic. His name is Rob Stock....and what a story!
Presently, Rob oversees his 5600 sq. foot training facility, known as: HPI Human Performance Initiative, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. If you are locates in that general area, it may be very worth checking out! They have a well equipped gym that includes the latest Power-Lift racks, along with plenty of motivated and skilled trainers who can help their clients meet specific goals...whether they be structured strength training programs, speed and agility enhancement, weight loss programs or even basic general fitness.
More importantly though, is to be in the midst of the driving force behind HPI...and that would be Rob Stock. You see, Rob Stock is far from the typical gym owner. And, it was as I sat in the auditorium of the Clara Bell Smith Center at MSU that I heard an incredible story of survival, determination and grit. During a military tour in Afghanistan in 2010, Stock,a U.S. Navy SEAL sniper, was inches from a detonating 40mm enemy grenade that basically split his arm open from his wrist to his armpit and riddled his face with fragmentation that crushed his orbital bone, leaving him with a mouthful of crushed teeth. Marvelously, he was able to be choppered out of the area where a team of surgeons were able to begin piecing the damage back together. Photographs of his battle damaged arm are so graphic that it was difficult to look. And then the comeback ensued.
The attendees at Ken Mannie and Mike Vorkapich's MSU Strength Clinic heard a motivating and compelling story about a real life hero and survivor. So much of what we here from these wars are a few blips on the screen accompanied by a few wounded in action and fatality stats. Rob Stock brings it to life. Amazing comeback!
The video is a brief intro by MSU Clinic emcee Ted Lambrinides and an outtake from Stock's presentation.
