Just down the road from The University of Cincinnati, in the subdivision known as Clifton, is where the retired strength coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, Kim Wood, resides. Kim was the first full-time strength coach in the National Football League. Hired by the great Paul Brown, Kim helped to introduce strength training to the world of football. In today's NFL, most teams have strength "staffs." The training of multi-million dollar athletes is a big business of itself. Coach Wood was at the forefront and worked with some of the finest players that the "league" has known. He was fortunate in that he was able to be involved in two Super Bowls... the second of which required a spectacular San Francisco 49ers comeback.... Joe Montana to Jerry Rice...and then to John Taylor with 34 seconds remaining for the go ahead touchdown.
As you make your way through the beautiful home in this historic area of Cincinnati, you'll notice strength training apparatus in practically every room of the residence. And, a separate, attached home gym that takes on a character of its own with an almost museum type atmosphere. Kim is essentially a curator of the history of strength training of strongmen and football athletes.
Presently, he's studying, researching and compiling information about neck and head injuries in football. He's also concerned with the direction of strength training for athletics and he wants to help coaches gain focus on how this important job can be done to the fullest. In fact, coming up on June 17th & 18th, 2011, Coach Kim Wood will host and direct a training clinic and seminar to directly meet that objective.

2007 Kim Wood Interview with Ed Cicale
With baseball's Roger Clemens and his personal trainer Brian McNamee dominating much of the current sports pages, ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power, takes it's stand against drug use. The podcast, recorded in Kim Wood's unique home gym, explains the hard facts about steroids and human growth hormone (HGH) by two leading authorities. Ted Lambrinides serves on the NCAA's speakers bureau and has spoken to hundreds of coaches and college athletes, as well as high school coaches and players, too about the perils of steroid use.
While some coaches "looked the other way", Kim Wood did the opposite. He took a stand. He knew and understood the dangers of the drugs..... often citing that players who delved into steroids were also admitting that they "didn't have what it takes to be a man". Kim retired a few years ago after a 28 year career as an NFL head strength coach for the Cincinnati Bengals.

They say that "a man's home is his castle". OK..... However, today I visited a man's home which was his weightroom! The home has several gyms with in the walls...and an addition that houses another gym. Even while taking care of culinary duties, one can still pump some iron....right there in the kitchen. Want to go out and sit on the deck? Forget it.... . there's training to be done there, too. That's the way it is when your Kim Wood. He's been involved in strength training and conditioning for decades. Yes, decades.
He started weight training as a youngster, training to become a better wrestler and football player. He then continued his training, behind the scenes, as a running back at the University of Wisconsin in the sixties....long before the fancy weightrooms and training complexes known to today's players. Later, he worked for Arthur Jones, the legendary designer of the Nautilus machines. In 1975, Kim became one of the first strength coaches of professional football, when he was hired by Paul Brown of the Cincinnati Bengals. During that time, he was also one of the three principals who created the now, world famous, Hammer Strength machines. He retired from the Bengals after 28 years with the team and was lucky enough to experience two Super Bowls along the way. He crossed paths with coaches Bill "Tiger" Johnson, Forrest Greg, Bill Walsh, Sam Wyche, Dick LeBeau...met with Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler on several occasions, and trained many All-Pro NFL stars.
Recently, he wrote a couple of chapters for Ellington Darden's latest book entitled "The New Bodybuilding for Old School Results".
Coach Wood's son, John Wood, didn't stray far from the strength training background that he grew up around. After his playing days as a University of Michigan football player, John ventured out into his own business known as Functional Hand Strength. Check out his site for some great strength training equipment and John's blog.
Kim Wood invited Ed Cicale and ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power into his "home" for a podcast interview that was recorded in his "A" framed training gym...slash... weight training museum (see photos). Today, April 20th, we'll post part one.On April 21st, we'll post Part two...then Part Three on April 22nd. Click on the little blue triangle to avoid long download times.
