Dr Burger was a former Notre Dame Fighting Irish football player who worked himself into the starting line-up on a team that had Joe Montana as their starting quarterback. The hard work that Burger embraced, earned him an opportunity for a National Championship with that squad! Years later, Dr. Burger's son Bobby also made the Notre Dame team, he was a tight end/fullback. Another son, Chris starred at Xavier University in Cincinnati as a Captain of the Musketeer golf team and brother John played there for Xavier Golf, as well. Meanwhile, another son, Joe Burger, starred and was a team captain at Ohio State Football, himself playing for a National Championship in 2014. Later, OSU scholar athlete was elected Captain for the 2016 Buckeyes.

Recent studies have shown that copper alloy surfaces kill E coli O157:H7. More than 99.9% of E. coli microbes are killed after just 1–2 hours on copper. On stainless steel surfaces, the microbes can survive for weeks. ... Copper's antibacterial effect was found to be intrinsic in all of the copper alloys tested.

Former Reds and Yankees Strength & Conditioning Coach Matt Krause and star pitcher Bronson Arroyo explained this shoulder strengthening routine to me and it's been a great addition to many athletes' programs. It's a great way to get your shoulders, especially the rotator cuff region, prepared for some serious strength training....... or some throwing!
Krause, who isn't a native of Cincinnati, has certainly developed an affinity for one of the Queen City's favorites. And that is Skyline Chili. That's where the locals get their chili in the form of a "3-way," "4-way" and the ultimate "5-way." So, Matt aptly named this regular shoulder strengthening routine used in the workouts by the Cincinnati Reds players the:
"5-Way Shoulder Routine" .... it's Skyline Time!
Matt Krause is presently the President of the Professional Baseball Strength & Conditioning Coaches Society~ PBSCCS He is also is the owner and director of OnMilk™
Five months into this COVID-19 chronicle of shutdowns and testings and masks and re-openings, there now appears to be minute amount of light at the end of the tunnel. Soon, things will be moving back to 20,000 fans at Ohio Stadium for Buckeye Football. The New York Yankees game but no fans in attendance. The NBA in Orlando. Seems hard to grasp. But now reality.
Lucky for me, I have tons of archived training footage and photos, and I'll be adjusting with more ZOOMed ASAP~Podcasts.
But for the strength and conditioning professionals out there, art and science is approaching a collision course. Coronavirus testing formats have changed the strength training groups and the way the training is assembled is the first noticeable change. Facility cleaning is in hyper mode. Every crevice in a training center could hold in germs.
So, now's the time to take a closer examination of the tools that we use in training our athletes. Just the other day, I was able to connect with Tom Grace, a long time strength and conditioning equipment professional who is presently located in Vancouver, Washington with his wife, Juanita . Their business is known as Black Iron Strength and they may just have one of the most time-relevant, innovative products available to the strength and conditioning industry. A complete line of antimicrobial copper strength training equipment. This is the wave of the future. Check it out:

What is Antimicrobial Copper CuLEAN® by CuVerro®?
Many ancient cultures, including the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks, recognized the inherent antimicrobial properties of copper. Copper-lined vessels were used to sterilize drinking water. Copper compounds were used to treat wounds and infections. With the recent outbreaks of untreatable infections including MRSA, which is often traced back to the work out facility. Black Iron Strength® took the ancient technology of copper and applied it to strength equipment. With this patented technology, Black Iron Strength® is the only equipment manufacturer to offer to offer free weight equipment with copper touch points. Copper surfaces by CuVerro® has been shown to kill more than 99% of bacteria within two hours of contact. Given that bacteria can survive on surfaces for months, Black Iron Strength® prefers to use CuLEAN® Antimicrobial Copper on their products and equipment. It is simply the best material for all surfaces as bacteria cannot thrive or survive on it.

It's strength clinic time and there are several reasons to get to one. For one, I've never been to a clinic where I did not return home with something newly added to my coaching toolbox. Fresh content! For example:
Upcoming clinics:
Michigan State Annual Strength & Conditioning Clinic
Notre Dame Football Strength & Conditioning Clinic February 21-22, 2020
Michigan State Strength Clinic: February 7 & 8th 2020
It's that time again to plan for professional development. Michigan State Football Strength & Conditioning, is presently prepping for its annual S & C Clinic that's to be conducted on February 7th and 8th of 2020.
Clinic Director Mike Vorkapich, Spartan Assistant Strength Coach, has assembled quite a strong list of clinicians that includes Ted Lambrinides who will serve as the Master of Ceremonies at The MSU Spartans Annual Strength & Conditioning Clinic at Michigan State University on February 7th and 8th 2020. Ted has spoken from coast to coast over the last 38 years on everything under the umbrella of sports and exercise science. Before embarking on his professional career, Lambrinides completed undergraduate, graduate and post graduate studies at The Ohio State University. He served for nine years as a collegiate strength and conditioning coach for the Buckeyes, his alma mater, and at The University of Kentucky. He's been been called upon as a guest speaker to many major college football programs where he's given streetwise and upfront talks to athletes about "Drugs, Supplements and Personal Conduct".
Ted was able to continue sports science research as he coordinated the Exercise Physiology Department at Thomas More College....tweaking his methodologies while training many of the top athletes in the Greater Cincinnati Tri-State Region. As a sports performance consultant, Coach Lambrinides has provided expertise on performance training and ergogenic aids to numerous collegiate and professional football and basketball programs. He's frequented practically every SEC and Big Ten program and most NFL teams as well.

When I first met Dan Wirth in 1994, he was the Director of Strength & Conditioning at The University of Arizona. Dan was the head strength coach for the Wildcats football team under head football coach Dick Tomey, the school's all-time winningest coach. Think Desert Swarm..... Tedy Bruschi .... Chuck Cecil. Coach Wirth assisted me with some football strength program design while I was coaching at Ohio's largest enrollment high school, Cincinnati Oak Hills. I visited Tucson several times and was always able to pick up some fresh ideas to tweak my program back in Cincy. Plus, I got to meet legendary basketball coach Lute Olson the day after their national championship parade..... sitting in his office talking hoops with the winning coach!

Anyway, fast forward twenty-five years and Dan Wirth is still at it. But, now in Knoxville at The University of Tennessee. There's no desert there, but there's Rocky Top, Smokey, checkerboards and lots of bright orange! Coach Wirth is the Director of Olympic Sports Performance for the Tennessee Vols and his newly rebuilt headquarters is amazing! Rows of brilliant Sorinex racks and supplemental equipment, training recovery devices, Pitsharks, The Bear, a slick Teambuildr Online Software system. They have the whole package and the former Iowa Hawkeye linebacker couldn't be happier!

Talk about a swarm of Yellow Jackets! This Georgia Tech Football squad was on the go as head strength Coach Lew Caralla certainly had things stirred up. This particular workout that sport science researcher and NFL player tracking specialist Dr. Ted Lambrinides and I witnessed consisted of some team building activities, some very well executed squat sets, some single-arm dumbbell bench presses. There was also a pretty serious bar hang competition going on.
The strength training facility is located within the football home of the Yellow Jackets, Bobby Dodd Stadium. The scoreboard flashed a message, but nobody was there to see it. However, just a short walk through the tunnel and it was a complete contrast to the action inside the weightroom. We entered the Hugh Spruill Strength Training Center at 5:44 a.m. as the strength staff made preparations for the workout. A few minutes later... the action. And here's more pics of the training!
